A major component of a good magic trick is to defy your subject’s expectations. This is perhaps one of the reasons why a set of cards is such a staple in magic: it’s an object with which everyone is familiar, and whose contents can be manipulated to produce surprise and amazement.
Some of the most impressive – and creative – card tricks are those which play with those rules. These are the so-called ‘gaff’ tricks. If you’re able to stick two cards together and ‘transform’ them into a third, then you’ll have ventured outside the realms of ordinary card trickery. That’s why decks containing bizarre and nonstandard cards like the fourteen of diamonds and the three-and-a-half of clubs are so useful. They allow you to do things that no-one would have expected!
Similarly, if you’re able to alter the shape of a card, then you’ll provoke similar surprise. After all, people expect cards to be solid, regular and rectangular. An ordinary card transformed into a strange and irregular one through sleight of hand is bound to amaze – and defy expectation.
On these pages you’ll find all of our gaff decks. You can use these decks however you like – mix them together with ordinary ones in order to disguise them, before producing them at the opportune moment. Master the tricks of these decks and you’ll be able to amaze your audience – and cause them to doubt what a deck of cards really consists of!
